Renewed national and international interest in and commitment to the special needs of children in situations of armed conflict is rather recent and has developed in large part because of the initiatives taken by UNICEF's Executive Board and staff.
High profile acts of violence, particularly in schools, can confuse and frighten children who may feel in danger or worry that their friends or loved-ones are at risk. They will look to adults for information and guidance on how to react. Parents and school personnel can help children feel safe by establishing a sense of normalcy and security and talking with them about their fears.

The United Nations issued a report on Wednesday stating that the number of civilians killed or wounded in Afghanistan rose by 23 percent in the first six months of 2013, with women and children faring the worst -- killed by roadside bombs almost every day. An earlier UN report noted that "Afghanistan remains one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a child". Over a third of Afghans are living in abject poverty, violence is escalating as NATO forces withdraw, and years of international aid has done little to decrease the abuse of women and children. These children, growing up in a country torn by warfare for decades, do their best to live normal lives -- learning to cope with the dangers, finding time to play when they can, and learning lessons from the adults all around them. Famines are acute food crises, usually after drought or due to armed conflict. Famine is the worst form of food shortage. In addition to old people, babies and small children are especially threatened by starvation. Tragically, in 2021, an estimated 5 million children lost their lives before reaching their fifth birthday, and 2.1 million children and youth aged between 5-24 years died. Additionally, 1.9 million babies were stillborn. Two recent reports on the global situation of stillbirths and child mortality provide a sobering glimpse into where in the world children and pregnant women are at the greatest risk. These data underscore the urgent need to address preventable causes of death, as millions of children and babies continue to die needlessly, many before they even have the chance to take their first breath.
The aim of this interdisciplinary and international research network on children born of war thus aims at bridging the gap in information and knowledge by collecting data and information, gathering research results, literature and on-going research, developing recommendations of best practicesto secure the rights of children born of war in co-operation with NGO\u2018s and governmental organisations and developing medical therapies focusing on the special needs of those children.

To better comprehend this alarming, underreported global situation, World Vision and War Child Holland spoke to 220 children, 245 adolescents and young people, 287 parents and carers and 44 child protection experts and community leaders in six conflict-affected countries: Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Jordan, Lebanon, the occupied Palestinian territory and South Sudan.
We found that more than half (57%) of children living in fragile and conflict-affected countries expressed a need for mental health and psychosocial support as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns.This finding could indicate that 456 million children worldwide are currently likely to need mental health and psychosocial support.
Thousands of children are serving as soldiers in armed conflicts around the world. These boys and girls, some as young as 8 years old, serve in government forces and armed opposition groups. They may fight on the front lines, participate in suicide missions, and act as spies, messengers, or lookouts. Girls may be forced into sexual slavery. Many are abducted or recruited by force, while others join out of desperation, believing that armed groups offer their best chance for survival. We are working to prevent the use of child soldiers and to hold accountable the people who send children to fight.

Wasting is defined as low weight-for-height. It often indicates recent and severe weight loss, although it can also persist for a long time. It usually occurs when a person has not had food of adequate quality and quantity and/or they have had frequent or prolonged illnesses. Wasting in children is associated with a higher risk of death if not treated properly. Stunting is defined as low height-for-age. It is the result of chronic or recurrent undernutrition, usually associated with poverty, poor maternal health and nutrition, frequent illness and/or inappropriate feeding and care in early life.
