Rolfe Michael Schiffer is Senior Advisor and Counselor on the Democratic Staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He formerly served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for East Asia in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs. Before joining the Department of Defense, he was a Program Officer at the Stanley Foundation, responsible for the Foundation`s Asia programs as well as a range of other U.S. national and global security issues and also was a Council on Foreign Relations Hitachi International Affairs Fellow in Japan. Prior to that, worked on the staff of U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), including as her Senior National Security Adviser and Legislative Director. Prior to that, he was Director of International Security Programs at New York University`s Center for War, Peace, and the News Media, and Co-Manager of the Poipu Bed and Breakfast Inn in Kauai. Schiffer received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and graduate degrees from the London School of Economics and New York University.
Robert E. Primus is a Member of the Surface Transportation Board. Primus previously served in the office of Congressman Tony Cárdenas (D-CA), first as his Senior Advisor and then as Chief of Staff. Prior to this, Primus served as Senior Advisor to Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH) and Chief of Staff to Representative Nanette Diaz Barragán (D-CA). Primus formerly served in the Office of Representative Michael Capuano (D-MA), first as Legislative Director and then as Chief of Staff. In addition to his Chief of Staff duties, Primus advised Representative Capuano on national security, health care, transportation and Coast Guard-related matters. Primus spent four years at Van Scoyoc Associates, Inc. where he represented and advised firm clients on budgetary, appropriations, transportation, and national security matters. Primus also served on the staffs of Representative Mel Reynolds (D-IL), Representative Carrie Meek of (D-FL), and Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ).
The vault is safeguarded by a comprehensive multilayered security system, highlighted by a 90-ton steel cylinder protecting the only entry into the vault. How to Keep Burglars Away From Your HomeThe right locks add security.The easiest way to prevent theft in your home is to lock your doors and windows when you leave, whether you'll be gone a few minutes or a few days.Yet, standard door locks, like key-in-the-knob spring bolt locks, may not be enough to deter experienced thieves. Your best choice for a door lock is a single-cylinder dead bolt lock, backed by a reinforcing strike plate with three-inch screws. The dead bolt should be at least one inch thick and extend at least one inch into the door frame when locked.Sliding patio doors and windows.These present a special security challenge. A dowel or pipe in the slider track helps, but isn't perfect. Thieves can bypass them by lifting the doors or windows out of their slide channels. You can help prevent this by tightening adjustment screws to eliminate "play" in a door or window. Better yet, use a bolt lock.Also, lock your garage and any storage sheds on your property, especially if they contain tools or ladders thieves can use to break into your home. Use a quality dead bolt lock here too, if you can.Avoid leaving an extra 'hidden" key outside your home, such as under the doormat or in a mailbox or planter. To make sure you can always get in, leave a duplicate set of house keys with a trusted neighbor or friend.
It is recommended to have any windows in the door a minimum of 36" from the dead bolt or door lock.Don't be an easy target.Using quality locks is one good way to keep you and your family from being victimized by crime. But, keep in mind that burglars search for easy targets. Security measures you take outside your home may force burglars to look elsewhere.Thieves often prefer to operate in the cloak of darkness. For that reason, keep entryways, pathways, stairwells, porches, yards and parking areas well lit. Mount lights up high so they can't easily unscrew lightbulbs.You can add to the security of your lighting system and cut your electric bill by installing a motion detector on outside lights. This will activate your lights when anyone comes within range of the unit's motion sensor.Also, keep tree branches and shrubs trimmed away from your home so that can't be used as hiding places.Make your home look lived in even when you're not there.
