This one doesn't drop until this Tuesday, but getting DVD's early is one of the fringe benefits of being a DVD reviewer for this fine website. It's great for getting good movies before everyone else... and for getting to see the bad ones before everyone so I can warn them to avoid flicks like Kings of South Beach on the shelves of your local DVD merchant. It really could've been a cool theatrical flick but instead this TV movie is lacking in almost every way, save some slick turns from Jason Gedrick and Donnie Wahlberg. CLICK HERE for my full review.
The ONLY thing that's cool about this whole DVD is that Nick Chinlund, who always plays bad guys, plays a priest here. A slightly demented priest, sure, but a priest all the same. He's only in the movie for maybe 5 or 6 minutes though. Everything else, and I mean EVERYTHING ELSE is terrible about this movie. No redeeming qualities whatsoever. Avoid at all costs. Danger! Wow. This one has Andy Griffith (yes, THAT Andy Griffith) as a widowed grandpa who learns how to hit on women from his grandson, played by Paul Campbell from Battlestar Gallactica. Doris Roberts and Marla Sokoloff star as well and this sounds utterly retarded. Sure, it'll be cool to see Andy Griffith up on the silver screen again, hitting on chicks, mind you, but come on. There's no way this will make any money whatsoever. A tad ironic this is coming in the same week we heard about a studio not wanting any female-lead movies... Worst News of the Week Nominee.
I've been pumped for this one for quite awhile and it certainly could end up being an Oscar favorite for many reasons. For one, it has a perfect Christmas Day release. Two, the fabulous cast of Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Emily Blunt and Ned Beatty. Three, amazing screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, FINALLY coming back to movies after many years in TV and four, director Mike Nichols. This looks like a marvelous movie, full of Sorkin's humor and based on an incredibly true story of the start of American's involvement in Afghanistan in the 80s. This should be one powerhouse of a movie, folks. Charlie Wilson's War opens on December 25.

The Solid Waste Information Management System is a Web-enabled application that tracks and reports how much waste each community in Los Angeles County produces. Previously, Public Works created these reports manually in hardcopy. Instead of two full-time civil engineering assistants, one administrative assistant now generates the reports. The new system standardizes the reports, eliminates data entry errors and streamlines the compiling and reporting process, resulting in annual cost savings of $580,000. Any user, including the public, can access solid waste disposal information and download a variety of reports. All landfills, solid waste transfer stations, waste-to-energy facilities, materials recovery facilities and waste haulers can send their information through this application. Users can log in 24 hours a day, create customized reports, upload figures and make changes using minimal county staff resources. Access to this information is crucial for planning County solid waste management programs. Customized reports facilitate trends analysis, enabling the County, cities and other agencies to more effectively plan solid waste disposal and safeguard public health and the environment.
